Sebaceous cyst

Sebaceous cysts are small, benign lumps that often form on the skin. They are caused by a build-up of sebum, a type of oil, in a sebaceous gland. Sebaceous glands are tiny glands that secrete oil (sebum) into hair follicles to keep hair moisturized. Sebaceous cysts can vary in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. They may be smooth or contain a core of hardened sebum and dead skin cells.

Sebaceous cysts are most commonly found on the face, neck, chest, back and upper arms, but they can occur anywhere on the body. They are not usually painful but can become tender and swollen if they become infected.

How Are Sebaceous Cysts Removed?

What is Cyst excision?

Cyst excision is a surgical process that is used to remove sebaceous cysts or Epidermal sinus cysts. Sebaceous cysts are also called Skin epidermal cysts.

How is cyst excision carried out?

Firstly, our expert dermatologist at Vitals Skin and Hair Clinic in Bangalore will mark the skin with a skin marker. Local anesthesia is given, and an incision is made till the subcutaneous tissues and the plane between the cyst and the underlying tissues are identified. Then the cyst is gently separated. The circumference of the cyst is separated from the surrounding tissues and the covered area is gently pressed out with thumbs till the rest of the cyst comes out of the area. The area is sutured.
